Now Listening: This Week's Tracks

Christian Blue - “Luv Drunk”

Hip-hop continues to re-introduce itself in our 21st century musical landscape. Lately, the continued blend of funk and hip-hop has created a number of songs appearing on any of our playlists, and Christian Blue dares you to add another to the mix. “LuvDrunk” stings with a hypnotic beat, twisting heavy in a psychedelic uproar, while Mr. Blue raps about not only being intoxicated by a scorching heat, but by a new girl in his life. A new relationship tracks its own course, especially how it enters into our lives. That expression of newness for us manifests in different ways. It can either make our words cut right to their meaning or place our heads onto speed drive, trying to decide how to turn one night together into a string of countless memories. If you got a special someone - making you feel drunk every time they are in your presence - Christina Blue has already got a song all for you!

Gawn - “Willoughby”

There are certain songs that have happiness encoded into them. Gawn has found a way to convince the world that a smile is what the doctor ordered during our heightened Quarantine Times with their new track, “Willoughby.” The 3-part harmonies make the lyrics sink you into and away on a cloud, taking you to your happy place. The production resides in vintage - seeming to take materials from The Beach Boys and Peter Bjorn & John sonics’ attire - while adding a modern lofi center piece. The moment the song began, my head wouldn’t stop moving back and forth. “Willoughby'' is a song meant for all seasons because it evokes embracing the urge to hideaway - even in plain sight - and the joys being lost can bring. After the bands 2020 LP, Thee Essence Ov Everything, and now with this new single, they are going to continue to tell Brooklyn, the home where they honed their dreamy synths - along with the world - why they need a little bit of Gawn in their life.

TUSHAR - “Arthur”

Decoding a song and interpreting the meaning behind seemingly cryptic lyrics can be exciting, fruitful, or lead to a complete dead-end. With TUSHAR’s bright bedroom pop single debut single “Arthur”, you’d think it is about a struggling relationship that makes TUSHAR’s “bones turn to dust.” But the song is in fact just about that, bones. TUSHAR explains, “this track is about my enemy, arthritis. I wanted to give a pseudonym to replace the word arthritis in this song; so I used the name, 'Arthur'.” The song is an upbeat indie-pop track that once you know the meaning of only cements TUSHAR’s charm, relatability, and lyrical prowess. From the twee whistling in the chorus to their silver-toned voice, this is a song for the summer and you’ll play incessantly.

Sexy Pigeon - “Run Away Together”

“Run Away Together” is a lo-fi, bedroom pop single from the California|Dutch duo Sexy Pigeon, perfect for those warm spring days. The song was written by members Robin Cause and Darrel Dier, who quickly bonded when meeting at a skydiving dropzone in Northern California in 2017. With their strong friendship and ever-growing creative bond, they since then have traveled the world, writing new songs and exploring new countries along the way. “Run Away Together”, with its laid-back style and sunny, optimistic sounds, is the first single from their highly anticipated EP, which is set for release early summer. For now, this track is definitely one we will have on repeat, waiting to hear what comes next!

Almelda - “Mind”

The English duo Almelda have released their debut single “MIND”, a blase blend of folk and ethereal psychedelic sounds that will have you engulfed in nostalgia or overwhelmed with total serenity. The duo consists of Molly Beacock as the songwriter and beautifully toned vocalist, and Harry Oetegenn as the dialed-in music producer. Their primary influences include Julia Jacklin, Mazzy Star, and Angel Olsen. These influences are reflected in “MIND” through the thoughtfully crafted lyrics, resonate guitars, and the synthesis of Molly and Harry’s musical strengths. A stunning debut and easy addition to playlists, “MIND” is the kind of unforgettable song that we never knew we were looking for..

Palo Sopraño - “Easy”

Delivering a gentle indie track, Palo Sopraño’s woozy vocals on “Easy” are heartfelt and mirror the innocence laced in his lyrics. The track is layered with sweet guitar strums which make for a delicate melody. It’s a warm, mellow song, and the singer’s calm vocal tone is comforting.

Progressing and falling into synth-pop, the track ends on a cheerful high. “Easy” is an introspective and evocative song that captures details of life in an uncomplicated way, without romanticizing or dramatizing.

Palo Sopraño (Ryan Pickard) is a multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter, currently based in Los Angeles. Sopraño released his last EP Candy back in fall and has an impressive catalogue of songs already to his name which are worth checking out after “Easy”.

No Fun Haus x Mymanfrancois x Frankie - “Man In The Moon”

Nostalgia-infused psychedelic pop is present in No Fun Haus’ “Man In The Moon” in collaboration with Mymanfrancois and Frankie. It’s a soft-sounding, sincere melody which recalls the importance of human connection. The lyrics ruminate on respecting the people you love with the analogy of a man on the moon, providing distance and time to a relationship. The vocals are delicately inviting whilst simultaneously detached.

No Fun Haus’ (Sam Tiesworth)  music provides warmth, and the multi-instrumentalist/producer draws inspiration from the indie pop-rock genre such as Tame Impala as well as older acts such as George Harrison. These influences are certainly felt in the production style of “Man In The Moon”. It’s a love song from afar and is a fitting soundtrack to summer sunsets.
