JEVON FLOWERS IS JUST LIKE YOU—The 20-year-old from Columbus, Ohio has been making indie music since about 2024, but the music isn’t what he loves most, it’s the connections the music brings him.
Flowers was first introduced to making music through his cousin. Long before he released his actual music, he would go into his studio just to mess around, and eventually started releasing “terrible” underground rap in 2021.
Flowers said he’s been writing music since he was little, he just didn’t know he was doing it. He’d even write songs after watching episodes of “Austin and Ally.” A few of his inspirations include Bruce Springsteen, Frank Ocean and Dominic Fike.
Though he can be quite introverted, he loves connecting with people through music. Flowers said he’d love to meet the people who interact with his music on social media platforms, because he feels as though his music is connecting them.
Outside of making music, Flowers hangs out with his friends and reads a lot of books. With not much to do in the town of Columbus, he enjoys finding different creeks in the city and exploring them.
Other than that, Flowers focuses a lot on his music. Lately, he’s been in vocal and guitar lessons. He writes almost every day, even if the music doesn’t make it to the recording and releasing stages.
His writing process starts with the chorus or the melody first, and then he builds the verses, the layers and the adlibs on top. His notes app contains thousands of song ideas to show for it.
Flowers said his upcoming music puts an emphasis on vocals and is a little more pulled back than his previous work. Along with that, the topics of the songs are a lot more personal.
Released in March of last year, “From a corner” is Flowers’ favorite song that he has released. An unreleased song he is proud of is called “Golden Child.”
Though he wouldn't have it any other way, Flowers mixes and masters his own songs all by himself, a difficult process at times.

LUNA: How long have you been making music for?
FLOWERS: When I first got into music it was through my cousin. He had this studio and I’ve always been writing music since I was little but I never knew, I just wrote music. I used to watch “Austin and Ally” and write songs a lot after seeing that. My cousin had a studio and I used to just go in there and mess with him and then I started releasing super terrible underground rap in 2021 and then I actually started releasing my actual own music around 2024.
LUNA: How has your sound changed over time?
FLOWERS: It's changed so much, I'd say for the better. I really was on that underground rap scene and then around senior year I really started to open up my palette a little bit more. I always liked singing and I always wanted to sing, I just didn't know how I was going to implement it. So as I listened to more music and got more inspiration I just decided to make whatever it is that I'm listening to, whatever I like to listen to and then that's pretty much how that came about.
LUNA: What is the songwriting process like for you?
FLOWERS: It's really random, I'll do it if I'm out somewhere, I'll start writing or if I'm going through something, I'll start writing something. When I start recording it I kind of just have the verse or I'll have the chorus and then I'll start going off of that. It's really whatever I'm going through, whatever I'm feeling.
LUNA: What are the inspirations behind many of your songs?
FLOWERS: It's really just experiences and, to be quite honest, whenever I'm going through a lot of stuff it lights a fire under me. So it's really whatever I'm going through, whether it's relationship problems or just stuff going on in life, it really inspires me to write. Also whenever I see something that I relate to, like the Bruce Springsteen movie that just came out, that really inspired me.
LUNA: What’s been giving you joy lately?
FLOWERS: I've been getting back into reading more. Also I just got an electric guitar, I've been on the acoustic for so long but I just got my electric guitar, so those things have been giving me a lot of joy recently.
LUNA: Can you talk about your most recent single, “You Could Save Me”?
FLOWERS: That one I was really debating on putting out, but I really like it; I like how simple it is. How that came about was I had a lot of relationship problems and I had found somebody that I thought that at the time was like “I'm going through all this stuff and all these other people are saying these things about me, but you could be the one to bring me up, bring me out of that.” The lyrics may not be all cheerful and happy but the melody is pretty upbeat and that's what I wanted.
LUNA: Can you talk about your EP, Flower Bed, Demos?
FLOWERS: I hadn't planned on dropping an EP for so long, and that was the perfect time for me to release that and it was really so I could get a lot of things off that I wanted to do and experiment with. Also at the same time, it was kind of just the perfect time, I had just gone through a breakup and I felt like, this needs to be out and I need to put this out and I was super excited to do it. I had a lot of help with that, a lot as in me and somebody else, but it was very experimental. I just really wanted to go with my chest, go with my heart and whatever it is that I thought I liked and just put it out. A lot of songs on there I didn't expect people to like. I'm really surprised at the things people were saying about it for sure, and it wasn't really the most polished thing, but it's still my heart. I'll always have love for it even though I'll grow.
LUNA: Can you talk about how you promote your music on TikTok?
FLOWERS: I started posting in 2024 and I was so against it at first. A lot of times when I do it it's really impulsive, I just don't think about it, I just post. As of recently I had to take some time with everything going on, but I'll be very active soon with a lot of this new music coming out. I love seeing people support what I was doing and I was super scared of people I went to school with being like, “dude’s trying to make music” but I was super nervous about that. I liked posting and I liked connecting with people that liked what I was doing. It really became a thing that I enjoyed after a while.
LUNA: What vibe do you think your music is for?
FLOWERS: Feel good music, summer music. It’s for people that like “feel good” music, maybe a little bit of something they can catch from messaging there but just have a good time.
LUNA: What are you working on next?
FLOWERS: This next one I'm gonna drop is called “Left Lonely,” as the title says it's very emotional, very melancholy. Because I just made Flower Bed, Demos, I wasn't gonna do another EP, but it's going to be two singles leading up to an EP.
LUNA: What do you want people to know about you as an artist?
FLOWERS: I want people to know I'm just like everybody else and I don't have this huge label backing me up. For a long time I didn't really want to be vulnerable with my music and I've gotten past that point now. No matter where this ride goes, I’m just like you, I go through stuff and I am human, I make mistakes just like you and I feel things just like you. We're all no different.
