Q&A: Maximilian Tanner Releases Dreamy “Full Surrender”

ON JULY 18—UK-based Maximilian Tanner released his latest synth-pop track “Full Surrender.” He’s an independent artist who recorded the song entirely himself in the seaside town Frinton-on-Sea.

A strength of Tanner’s is injecting his individual taste into his music. It’s what allows him to create a unique, ambient world. At the heart of his inspirations are synth-pop giants like John Maus.

You may recognize Tanner from the band BlackWaters. Now, he’s honing in on his individual sound, which is immersive and cinematic. Tanner doesn’t go light on the synths in “Full Surrender” and the result is the nostalgic late-night, young-love feeling that you’d find in a coming-of-age movie soundtrack.

Since its release, Tanner has also put out a single called “Requiem.” Read our full conversation with him below.

LUNA: You’ve mentioned that movies inspired “Full Surrender.” Which ones specifically?

TANNER: I draw inspiration from visuals in general. I like to envision the song fitting into a particular film. It resonates with me emotionally, although others may not share the same sentiment. I imagine any movie that features late-night driving under streetlights, with the roof down in light rain, alongside someone you love. While I can’t pinpoint a specific film that inspired me, I believe the imagery in my writing evokes a scene that feels profoundly suitable for a movie that carries emotional weight.

LUNA: Who are your personal favourite synth-pop artists?

TANNER: This is an easy question for me: Molly Nilsson, the queen of synth-pop. And John Maus, a king in his own right. They inspired me during my time in a tour van with my old band when I stumbled across them on a Rough Trade compilation. It felt like a child discovering candy for the first time. I was fortunate enough to support John years later. As for new artists, I adore GENTS. They’re incredible and I eagerly await their return with new music.

LUNA: My favourite thing about the song is the imagery like “watching lightning bugs fly.” Do you tend to note things down that you see, then incorporate them into your lyrics? Or are you more of an imaginative writer?

TANNER: Thank you! Yes, I frequently jot down observations while I’m out and about—things I see and notice. Often, I start and finish the lyrics of a song in one sitting. However, when it comes to production, things may shift. My creative process largely depends on my headspace. If I’m clear-minded, I can revisit previous notes and weave together what I’ve collected. Conversely, during personal struggles, I find a natural flow from beginning to end as I channel genuine emotions. At times, I worry about being too honest or personal, but I always feel relieved when I don’t hold back.

LUNA: You recorded “Full Surrender” in Frinton-on-Sea. You’ve said it feels like “the end of the earth.” Do you find that the seaside environment directly influences your creativity?

TANNER: It truly does feel like the end of the Earth. I’ve been living here for about two months. It’s a beach town on the Sunshine Coast. The water has always inspired me. Some people may not be affected by vast expanses of water, but to me, it’s awe-inspiring. I could watch it all day. This environment significantly impacts my writing, providing so much without the need for words. The tide and waves are constantly changing and evolving, much like ourselves.

LUNA: How did the show in Sheffield go with Terminal?

TANNER: It was amazing! There were some really lovely and humbling moments following the performance. Sometimes I struggle with accepting compliments, which I suppose is a common human experience—the mortifying idea of being perceived can feel alien. However, the experience was beautiful, and I loved performing in my old hometown. I am returning on September 10, supporting Warrington-Runcorn New Town Development Plan—a synth wizard. Terminal were also fantastic. It was an honor to share the stage with long-time friends and have people enjoy what I do.
