Q&A: Perel is Making Her Mark in The Electronic Music Scene

HAILING FROM THE EAST GERNAM STATE OF SAXONY - Annegret Fiedler has had a long-term committed relationship to music. Growing up, imprints of a multitude of sounds influenced her musical taste - including Annie Lennox, Kraftwerk, and The Cure. While shaping her own individual musical style, she has now landed on her own sound: as Perel, a producer, vocalist, and DJ that has graced the stages all across the world. Powerful and dialogical, the artist’s complexities in her music reflect the sound of her dreams.

The artist has had a complicated past, of dipping her toes in flute, piano, studying sociology and intercultural communication, and playing in a multitude of punk and alternative outfits. However, Berlin’s techno scene furthered her adoration of synth and bass sounds. Since then, her career has grown immensely; she also became the first German artist signed to DFA Records. Most recently, Perel has DJ’d alongside Mololink, KINK, Victor Ruiz, and more at Brooklyn’s most iconic electronic venue, Avant Gardner at CityFox Live. Read more about Perel and her musical footpath below.

LUNA: I understand you’ve been creating music for many years - you have a huge following and have played shows all across the world. What is your earliest memory of your love for music?

PEREL: I was born with universal love for music that lies within the code of life - my mother’s voice and the bird’s twittering is the first sound I remember.

LUNA: Sounds of youth are the most special. How has your past influenced your present and your intention within your music?

PEREL: Every second is present, future, and past at once. With music, you can send messages to the world and to yourself. Intentions vary but mainly aim to connect people and raise questions.

LUNA: I completely agree. What does the baseline of your creative process look like? Is there a specific place you draw inspiration?

PEREL: I see colors when listening to music. And most of the time I feel emotions and colors piling up inside me and then there’s a triggering sound or event that opens a portal or valve.

LUNA: How do you make sure you prioritize yourself, through a deeply crazy time of creating music and performing live?

PEREL: Prioritizing myself is a decision every moment. But it’s not always the right thing. Finding the balance between your ego and others is more important to me.

LUNA: Since you have played in a host of venues and festivals across the globe, what if your favorite venue or event you have played?

PEREL: Berghain or Panorama Bar, Sonar Festival, and many more.

LUNA: And what is to come?

PEREL: A lot of new music in the next months on Kompakt Records.
