IF ANYONE COULD CAPTURE THE BEAUTY OF NOSTALGIA, IT WOULD BE FAWN RIDGE—Intimate and tender, Fawn Ridge’s first EP Every Little Thing is a wistful collection that pays a stunning tribute to folk rock music. With songs about regret, pining after someone and attempting to come to terms with their absence, Fawn Ridge succeeds in telling a complex and captivating story, both through their lyrics and sound.
Composed of lead singer and guitarist Sky Van Cott, lead guitarist Justin Lindsay, Jordan Kerr on banjo and guitar, Anna Young on bass and Julian Miltenburger on drums, Fawn Ridge formed in 2024. The band has been playing shows around New York City, gradually releasing singles like “Hopelessly Hopeful” which has garnered over 100 thousand listens on Spotify since its release.
With this EP, the band captures the anxious melancholy we feel when we ache for someone that is no longer in our lives. Lyrics like “Turned away from truths/I so readily refuse to recognize” from the opening track “Regret” and “Did I pass you then on 7th Avenue?/Or did a stranger just steal your face?” from “Hopelessly Hopeful” are poignant and raw. This, paired with the twangy melody of banjos and guitars, provide a beautiful backdrop for Van Cott, who’s “got a voice that’s made for music,” to borrow a lyric from “Heavy.”
Subtly invoking the era of heartbroken cowboys and sad westerns, this is one of those rare collections that must be enjoyed from beginning to end, as each song is important to the overarching narrative.
