EXPERIMENTAL POP DUO MIAW RETURN WITH NEW SINGLE—”Walmart,” which marks their first release with untitled (recs) as part of its “(zero)” series. Co-producers Frederik Fog and Liza Dries began gaining traction after the release of their self-released single, “moving in,” amassing over 100K streams, and have been using their newfound platform to experiment further and fall deeper into their craft. This experimentation is prevalent within “Walmart.” The track flows through an array of sonic textures, each one more captivating than the last.
Inspired by genres like 90s trip-hop, shoegaze and UK bass, the Copenhagen-based duo naturally integrates pieces of each genre into their music, keeping listeners on their toes as to what pockets they’ll hit next. It’s incredibly interesting to listen to the song more than once in one sitting; you’ll consistently hear sounds you didn’t hear the first time around.
Introduced through a glitch-beat intro, “Walmart” combines high-energy dance music with mesmerizing vocals. Once you get acclimated to the world of the song, the energy quickly changes. With a quick switch, the song keeps its original beat but expands on it and adds a layer of shoegaze on top. While these two genres seem opposite at times, miaw’s artistry seals them together as if they were made for each other.
