OK GO PUT ON QUITE A SHOW—Their entire set, from beginning to end, brings that familiar triumphant energy that is typically reserved for an encore. OK Go start off with it.
At their sold-out show on June 21 at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver, celebratory confetti showered the crowd immediately as the band took the stage. It fell countless times throughout the show. After all, the band’s newest album And the Adjacent Possible is their first album release in 10 years—celebration is due. On this tour, they’ve been using 100 pounds of biodegradable and recyclable confetti per show.
Grammy Award-winning pop and rock band OK Go are Damian Kulash, Timothy Nordwind, Dan Konopka and Andy Ross. They’re known for their inventive and irreplicable music videos, such as their latest video for “Love” off the new album which has gained over seven million views. The band began touring And the Adjacent Possible in April and it has been a busy tour; they added a second show for Vancouver on June 22.
On June 21, OK Go put on an interactive show, even taking questions from the audience like who they thought would win a thumb fight between Godzilla and the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Kulash also performed an acoustic version of “This Is How It Ends” in the crowd before picking up the energy again back on stage with “Needing/Getting” off their 2010 album Of the Blue Colour of the Sky. There was a constant back and forth between the band and the audience—a mutual joy to be there together.
The frequent confetti along with a vibrant light set-up felt like stepping into one of their imaginative music videos. It was an immersive experience and dynamic too, like when the band switched out their instruments to play “Shooting the Moon” on hand bells. There wasn’t any space for distraction—OK Go put on a continuously entertaining and lively set.
The crowd was clearly exhilarated and even the band’s crew was smiling and grooving on the sidelines throughout the show. If OK Go’s performance can be summarized in one word, it would simply be “happy.”
