Review: Tessa Violet Lets You Into Her World With 'Bad Ideas: The Experience' Virtual Concert

TAKING VIRTUAL CONCERTS TO A NEW LEVEL - Tessa Violet gives it her all in her new show Bad Ideas: The Experience. Right after her album Bad Ideas came out in 2019, I once described it as “my entire taste in music.” As a longtime listener of the singer — who is known for her classic poppy tunes and sharp lyrics — I always believed that her latest record reflected her best works. An album, as they say, with no skips. Attending Bad Ideas: The Experience only cemented these feelings — because Tessa Violet sure can put on a show.

Created in collaboration with Jade Ehlers, Bad Ideas: The Experience is a prerecorded hour long performance — all with a live band, costume changes, and expertly choreographed dance routines. It's easy to see why it's called an experience: the show pulls you into the world of Tessa Violet as she performs her old tracks alongside those from Bad Ideas. The show starts (spoilers) with Violet, seemingly live and seated in her room, asking how everyone is, and announcing that she will start by singing an acoustic song. Her vocals are soft and sugary right from the beginning — however, when Violet soon stands up and disappears into a room with a blinding white light, we realise that the first part of the show was, in fact, prerecorded. Comments of “I'm confused” and “what is happening” grace the screen as Violet appears in a completely white room, and the experience really begins.

Apart from Violet's stunning vocals and the smooth transitions from one track to the next, the synchronised dance moves are a sight to behold. The show also features an appearance from the loved Cavetown, whose voice blends beautifully with Violet as they sing “Smoke Signals” together. From start to finish, Bad Ideas: The Experience is exactly what it promises to be: an experience, a clear look at how brilliant the show would have been, had it been live.

Yet, Violet and her team somehow still manage to pull off something just as brilliant and creative, drawing you into a different world, even as you sit in the comfort of your home.
