Review: The Lazy Eyes in Los Angeles

IT WAS A COLD AND STORMY NIGHT in what is typically sunny old Los Angeles. As I braved the elements with a group of friends to venture out to the Echo, driving on wet freeways and running from the parking lot with a purse over my head, it became clear to me just how spoiled LA crowds are. Not only do we rarely have to face the elements when attending shows, but we truly are blessed with acts from all over the world. In this week’s lineup, we were gifted a young and incredibly talented group from just outside of Sydney- The Lazy Eyes.

The four piece psychedelic group consisting of Harvey Geraghty, Itay Shachar, Noah Martin, and Leon Karagic were rocking pretty heavily to more full of a venue than I would have expected from LA in the rain. The Echo, always filled to the brim with fashionable music lovers, had a particularly enthusiastic pit at this show. Fans were calling out to the boys in between every song, and aggressively swiping at the stage in search of loose setlists.

Though the stage set up was fairly minimal, the sound and lighting were fantastic, as they often are at this Eastside venue. This group truly oscillated between brighter upbeat pop-y tracks (reminiscent of Dayglow’s LA debut at this very venue) and heavier psych. Their technical mastery of their instruments was apparent, and to my ears sounded better live than the recordings (which were already fantastic).

There were multiple pleas from the group to check out their merch, allegedly limited edition pink shirts from a recent festival date in Mexico. We were also blessed with the information that they all got food poisoning there (sorry to hear it lads). I really must commend them for their confidence on stage- LA crowds are intimidating and its truly not every day that you hear audience members yelling “LA loves you” at any stage in this city.

One of the highlights of the show for me personally was when an audience member flung himself off the stage, not once, but twice (failing miserably both times). I loved the enthusiasm, but I don’t think the crowd was on the same page with him (or security for that matter). The stand out song of the set was their encore track “Where’s My Brain???” I do think that of all of their tracks, this had the most personality and I look forward to hearing more jams like this from them in the future.

As a personal sidenote, I love seeing artists at small shows like this. After the set ended I was able to meet the frontman of Pond, Nick Allbrook as well as LA indie darling Cuco in the patio section of the venue. Go to small venues and shows of rising artists! You never know who you might spot in the crowd!
