QUICKLY BUILDING MOMENTUM IN HIS ELECTRO-POP SOUND—Zack Morris has just dropped his most honest song to date, “Let Her Go” on April 24. An atmospheric track that explores the emotional effects of falling out of love, the single boasts a delicate simplicity.
Influenced by the likes of Noah Kahan and Alec Benjamin, Morris’s music is songwriter-driven and backed by cinematic electro production. With the clarity of the lyrics drifting in and out, we hear the emotional struggles of someone battling denial.
As early lyrics dismantle his previous belief that she “wore every angel wing,” it becomes fitting to question whether true love was ever present. Acknowledging his reliance on his partner to heal his “loneliness,” Morris slowly confesses that his feelings reflect his inner desires rather than extending toward her.
Behind this gradual unfolding of Morris’s inner emotions, the music maintains a brilliant mix of textures. With an incredibly relaxed style, the singer delivers even the most emotional moments with the ease of regular speech. A naturally fresh, clean timbre contrasts with the dynamic nature of the production, which shows remarkable development for a shorter single.
After a brief intro, “Let Her Go” settles into a simple texture of guitar-like synth and vocals. Here, we are introduced to a descending pattern that returns frequently throughout the song. With a lightly syncopated feel, the figure carries a sense of tripping over itself rhythmically. As a slightly unsteady backdrop to the simple vocals, it hints early on that the foundations of Morris’s relationship are unstable.
Moving into the chorus, the stripped-back texture is suddenly infused with new layers. As beats fade in and out, so do multitracked backing vocals, creating thick, lush harmonies that surround the listener. There’s a strong sense of movement as parts ebb and flow with a satisfying drift. Shifting the pace and feel of the track, the song moves from its initial instability into a smoother flow that embodies the peace found in finally letting go.
A great addition to Morris’s steadily growing discography, “Let Her Go” carries emotional weight while maintaining a relaxed feel. Led by a voice with addictive smoothness, Morris is becoming increasingly well established in his sound. His growing social media presence, along with recognition from artists such as Lauren Alaina, are promising signs for a singer who already shows clear potential for mainstream success..
