ALT-POP VISIONARY IZZY CAMINA RETURNS WITH DREAMY NEW MUSIC VIDEO – for her latest single, “Seven Seas,” ahead of the release of her EP, Saline. The music video stars Camina, clad in all white with angel wings. The video feels like a cathartic release of energy and a heavy hallucination all in one. The rhythm of the song puts listeners in a trance, sweeping them off their feet until they’re light as a feather, floating above the world below them.
In her new EP, Saline, Camina homes in on her singular vision, a vision that’s in part playful, but other parts transformative and healing. Her lyrics don’t feel pre-conceived; they feel organic in the playground that is this EP, bringing forth new life and a glaring sense of authenticity.
The Luna Collective received the opportunity to chat with Camina about her new single and EP, her transformation as an artist, her motivation to make music, and more. Read the full interview below.
LUNA: With your new EP on the way, what are some of the key differences or changes in sound compared to your previous EP, 'ANG3L NUMB3RS'?
CAMINA: I think this project is a stepping stone.
The last EP was a co-production. On this project, most of the tracks are produced by me. It feels more resonant; perhaps listeners can hear that, too. I think the tone is still theatrical. I’m not sharing too much of myself yet. It's still playful. I still have that distance.
LUNA: Through your music, what sort of emotions or feelings do you hope listeners have while listening?
CAMINA: Hopefully positive ones.
LUNA: Besides being a track on the EP, how does the title 'Saline' represent you and the EP as a whole?
CAMINA: The poetry of salt and saltwater specifically is really compelling to me. Baptism, tears, the ocean, witchcraft. Transformation, healing, cleansing, protection.
LUNA: What pushed your music from where it began to the style you're creating today?
CAMINA: Experience and confidence.
LUNA: "Seven Seas" is a cathartic exploration of transformation and rebirth. While making the track, how did these emotions verbalize themselves in less than two hours?
CAMINA: I think it's common for songwriters to freestyle and let things "arrive" without melodic forethought or physical lyric-writing. The trope of having something else speak through you is real. The subconscious. I guess that's why we create art. So the unknown, or marginally known, or even fully known, can show itself.
LUNA: Describe your music in three words.
CAMINA: Chalant, clever, sidechained.
LUNA: Your music is dark and sharp. Where do you balance dark and light, roughness and softness?
CAMINA: I'm not a dualist. I can’t be around people who are too sunshiney or, conversely, too cynical and depressing for too long. It feels dishonest to align with one side. We all ebb and flow between the two nodes. It’s important to find the middle way.
I try to apply that philosophy to everything. I give myself and others a lot of grace to move through their shit. To be disappointing and messy and then virtuous again. We’re complex. We’re all of the horror and all of the divinity.
When I was a kid, it was very hard for me to accept the world as it is, but there's so much innate light and beauty everywhere. When you shine a flashlight on the shadows, they go away. I believe light is an infinite inner and outer resource.
LUNA: What motivates you to make music?
CAMINA: Dopamine, access to my inner world, love, collaboration, community. I also enjoy the technical and intellectual puzzles that are an innate part of production and mixing.
LUNA: Any final messages to fans about the EP?
CAMINA: I've been moving slow over the past few years, but I’m stoked with what's emerged from the chrysalis.
