INTERVIEW
INTERVIEW

FUELED BY THE BLEND BETWEEN DELICATE, YET PASSIONATE VOCALS, AND CINEMATIC INSTRUMENTALS, “SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN” finds Matt Hansen lingering in the grey area between heartbreak and acceptance. Returning from an impressive tour that saw Hansen traveling the world for over half of 2025, “SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN” proves he is more ready than ever to share this next chapter with listeners on his debut album Orchid, out this summer. Music connects people in ways that words and actions sometimes cannot. There is a refreshing honesty to Hansen’s lyrics and vocal disposition that makes it easy and cathartic for listeners to expose their emotions and feel validated. The track is personal to his experience, yet relatable. Hansen offers up all his deepest fears and allows the pounding instrumentals to reflect his simultaneous heartbreak and freedom.
Luna had the chance to speak with Hansen about touring, the evolution of “SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN” and his forthcoming debut album—Keep reading below.
LUNA: 2025 was a huge year for you, congratulations! Can you tell me about the experience of touring? How did it feel to connect with listeners and share your songs so intimately?
HANSEN: Touring this year honestly changed everything for me. I was on the road for over half the year, playing all over the world in incredible venues far from home. Hearing people sing the songs back to me, especially the most vulnerable ones, was surreal. Some nights it felt less like a performance and more like a group of people sharing the same experience. It made the sense of community feel real and immediate.
LUNA: What do you hope people can take away from “SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN,” your forthcoming album and your music as a whole?
HANSEN: I hope people feel seen. “SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN” is about that gray area, the space where you’re in a bad situation but don’t know how to leave. I think a lot of us live there more than we admit, and that’s okay. With Orchid, I wanted to explore what it means to love deeply, lose yourself, and then slowly come back to who you are. If someone listens and feels a little less alone in that process, that means everything to me.
LUNA: The song addresses how love and relationships can change you. How do you think these experiences have changed your sound and the way you make music?
HANSEN: When a relationship ends it forces you to be honest with yourself. I think my sound has become more intentional and more vulnerable because I stopped trying to write what I thought people wanted to hear and started writing what I actually felt. The production on this album is still cinematic and emotional, but the lyrics tell a more personal story.
LUNA: Why was “SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN” your choice for the first single? Can you tell me about how the song developed from the writing stage to the final version we hear today?
HANSEN: “SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN” felt like the doorway into the album. It captures that emotional limbo that runs through Orchid without giving everything away. The song started very simply, just piano, and vocal, and it almost felt fragile. As we built it out, we were careful not to overpower that vulnerability. The final version still feels intimate to me, even as it grows sonically. It felt like the right place to start the story.
LUNA: Your debut album Orchid comes out this summer. What can you tease about the album?
HANSEN: Orchid is really a story about loving too deeply, losing yourself, finding the courage to leave, and realizing that healing can create space for something healthier to grow. The songs move through heartbreak, reflection and acceptance. Sonically, it’s cohesive but dynamic, with quiet moments and bigger, cinematic ones. It feels like the most honest thing I’ve made. It’s not just about the end of something, it’s about what grows after.
