THERE IS SOMETHING BITTERSWEET ABOUT DANCING ALONG TO A SONG—that knows exactly what it feels like to lose something that was never fully yours.
Midnight Generation perfectly captures that contradiction in their brand new single, “Almost My Own,” transforming the uncertainty of an almost-relationship into a retro groove that feels as emotional as it is infectious.
From the track’s opening moments, it establishes the world Midnight Generation has become known for: shimmering synthesizers, funky basslines and the presence of a talkbox.
The combination gives “Almost My Own”a disco and synth-pop foundation while maintaining the warmth of funk. It finds a space where the sounds of the past can coexist with a modern electronic production.
At the heart of the track is the emotional weight of an “almost.” The song explores the kind of connection with someone that feels close enough to become meaningful, only to disappear before it ever gets the chance to become deeper. “You were almost my own / I still believe / I guess that’s how it had to go” captures the feeling of acceptance with letting go. There is longing in the words, but the production refuses to dwell on it.
“Almost My Own”doesn’t sound like traditional heartbreak. It is a danceable production that creates emotional disconnect: the lyrics look backward while the music is pushing forward.
